What We Do » Scholarships Scholarships
The education and empowerment of women throughout the world Secondary Schools Education for Development provides scholarships for tuition, supplies, medical fees, uniforms (and occasionally boarding costs) to select students in attendance at partner schools. By providing scholarships, EdforDev not only provides disadvantaged youth with educational opportunities but also gives struggling schools income necessary for their continued success. As the bulk of school's fees often cover teachers' salaries, these scholarships simultaneously support stable employment for educators in the community. EdforDev currently funds scholarships for 10 young women at Kikaaya College School, where Elizabeth Whiston, founder and President of EdforDev, volunteered for seven months in 2004. EdforDev is also sponsoring 31 students at Namirama Community Secondary School in Eastern Uganda. Scholarship recipients are selected by EdforDev upon review and recommendation by their school's administration and community. EdforDev scholarship recipients must demonstrate serious financial need and academic promise, based on applications, interviews and school records. The financial assessment includes family income, the presence of parents or guardians in the student's home and their employability (e.g., literacy, health). All recipients must have a prior satisfactory academic record and maintain a high level of academic interest and achievement while on scholarship. All scholarships are reviewed yearly; based on satisfactory results, scholarships are maintained until the students complete their secondary school career.
Costs: If you're interested in supporting a student's education in Uganda, please visit our donation page or write us directly at email; we will be happy to give you more information on individual students and other prospective scholarship recipients.
