What We Do

There’s no such thing as sustainable technology or economic development without sustainable human development to match.
Gaviotas: A Village to Reinvent the World

Through the support of people's educational empowerment worldwide, Education for Development is supporting the capacity of individuals to assist their own communities in the development necessary to create an equitable, global learning community.

Through the support of education, cultural exchange and service programs in both the US and our partner institutions, we assist in the development of a new generation of compassionate and intellectual leaders who understand the value of a diverse global community.

Construction
Currently, EdforDev is raising money to build a science lab at Kikaaya College School.  To see photos of Kikaaya click here. To learn more about Kikaaya here.

EdforDev constructed Namirama Secondary School in eastern Uganda. The former community school was housed in a mud brick building with dirt floors, no glass in the windows, one door and hot iron sheeting for a roof.  See photos and stories from the building project at Project Manager and Engineer Anna Levitt's blog.

Scholarships
EdforDev provides scholarships and school uniforms to students who attend EdforDev partner schools in Uganda and the Dominican Republic.
Uganda
EdforDev currently funds scholarships for 10 young women at Kikaaya College School where Elizabeth Whiston, founder and president of EdforDev, volunteered for seven months in 2004.

EdforDev also funds scholarships for 30 students, mostly girls, to attend Namirama Secondary School.

The female literacy rate in Uganda, for example, is 60.4%, compared to 79.5% for males and the U.N. publication "Africa Recovery" notes that girls comprise only 32% of the Ugandan secondary school population.  For these reasons and board members' commitment to gender equity, EdforDev currently provides scholarships primarily to female students.

Dominican Republic
Starting in 2008, EdforDev launched a new partnership with Escuela La Jagua, a K-12 public school in La Jagua, Dominican Republic, on the northeastern end of the island. 15-20 kids in this poor, mountainous community currently do not have access to education because their families cannot afford the cost of a school uniform. Public schooling in the country is free but children are required to wear a uniform to attend and these are not provided free of charge. According to the school's principal, Félix Familia, uniforms are the only barrier to these kids' access to an education. Thus, EdforDev is committed to raising money to cover the cost of a uniform and a pair of shoes (which together amounts to roughly $25 US) for each of these children in order to give them what all children in the world deserve: access to an education.

International Student Support
EdforDev helps to facilitate study in U.S. universities for highly motivated international students. Read more about Nasredeen Hassan from Sudan and Bangadi Kiki Renaud from Gabon.

Cultural Exchange
There are several projects within the EdforDev Cultural Exchange area, all designed to support the education of people in the U.S. and abroad so we may become a more aware and compassionate global society.

School Materials
No school can function without learning materials.  In our construction efforts we are also committed to providing all their needed school furnishings (e.g., desks, chalk boards, book shelves), equipment (e.g., computers, science equipment, copy machines), supplies (e.g., chalk, paper, lab supplies), and both text and library books.  Often we partner with organizations, such as Rotary International in Namirama Secondary School's case, to furnish schools.

Partnerships
Education for Development regularly partners with the communities in which we work, as well as with a variety of other organizations.
